My Grandparents (part 2)

And yet another dazzling tale bursting forth from my amazing fingers describing my incredible life for your summer/autumn pandemic enjoyment, oh my dear faithful followers!  Last episode dealt with my farm folk grandparents featuring my colorful grandfather and prim and proper grandmother.  This episode takes you to the city where my other grandparents originated.  My mother always said, it took a city girl to marry a farmer.  Wonder what she meant by that!

 My mother, Marion Louise Gruber Simmons, was born to George and Louise Cron Gruber on July 30, 1912 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   Grandpa was one of the first CPAs in the state, and his financial success made it possible for them to move into a large, lovely home on Grand Avenue, the main street that leads to the heart of the city.  It is now called Wisconsin Avenue.  It also allowed them to have a summer home on Pewaukee Lake, 20 miles west of the city, which was a  popular thing to do with Milwaukeeans at that time. 

 Before Grandpa’s success in his career, they had lived with my great grandmother, Louisa Cron Humrich, in an apartment above the grocery store she owned after her husband died.  Both the Cron and Gruber families had moved from Germany around the middle of the 1800s.  The first language my mother learned was German, and didn’t learn English until she started school.

 My grandparents were a handsome, young couple who might have been considered Yuppies in the early 1900s.  Grandma was tall and wore fashionable clothes that reflected the Victorian era.  Her her dress flowed gracefully behind her as she stepped onto a streetcar to go shopping, one of her favorite things to do.  Her outfit was always complete with a large hat loaded with swooping feathers that complimented her beautifully coiffed hair.   She did not allow Victorian restraints to stifle her bubbly personality nor keep her from playing games with her children.  She was openly a very affectionate mother.  My mother used to say she was “full of hell!”

  In spite of Grandpa’s somewhat heavyset figure common to young men of German descent, he was good looking and very intelligent.  He was a loving father who was proud of his family.  Being one of the few CPAs in the state, he travelled a great deal of the time.  Unfortunately, his love of good old German beer slowly became a problem and finally disrupted what looked like a perfect family.

Mom said she would sit on the front steps of their home each afternoon and wait for her father to come home after work.  She said she could always tell when he got off the streetcar whether he had been drinking, and if he had she would run into the house to alert her mother.   Sadly her loving father would become angry and abusive when he drank.  fThis lead to a divorce, which in those days was rare and carried a certain amount of stigma.

Mom moved with her mother and younger brother to their vacation home in Pewaukee, which became their permanent home.   Grandma enjoyed being around Mom’s friends who were often present at their home.  In the winter when her friends went sledding, she would go sledding along with them.  A very steep hill next to the village school was a popular place for sledding. Cars weren’t plentiful in those days so sledding on that high slippery hill wasn’t very dangerous.  Grandma, as usual, was the only adult sledding and on one of her belly flopping occasions, she lost control of the sled and had to be dug out of a snow drift that had suddenly jumped in her way. Her legs hanging out of the snow drift was all that could be seen.  It never dampened her spirits though.  She kept on belly flopping all afternoon.

Mom’s friends often came to their home to ice skate as their home was on the lake and had direct access to the ice.  Even though Grandma had never skated before, she was ready to try anything.  On her first attempt, she courageously but unsteadily got up on her skates and took off like she knew what she was doing.  However, a large crack in the ice suddenly appeared which she unfortunately didn’t see. Pulled out of the ice, completely soaked and extremely embarrassed, she ripped off the skates and angrily hiked up the hill to the house.   She always treated Mom’s friends to hot chocolate and cookies after skating, but no cookies and hot chocolate were available that afternoon.   Her skating career was over.

My grandmother died of tuberculosis when she was only thirty-seven.  Mom was fifteen then and her brother was twelve.  Grandma of course had to know her death was leaving her children in an uncertain position.   My dad was one of the friends that often came to their home, and by that time she knew him quite well and knew that he loved my mother.  No doubt in an effort to help secure Mom’s future, Grandma assured Mom he was a good man and would be a good husband.  Mom and Dad were married three years after her death.  Her brother lived with them until we finished high school and got a job.

Of course, I never really knew my grandmother, but over the kitchen table many, many evenings, Mom told my brother and me these stories and so many more and how warm and affectionate she was.  Some years later I asked my Dad if Grandma was as wonderful as Mom had pictured.  He thought for a minute, then nodded and said, “Yes, she was pretty wonderful!”

Grandpa had married again to a very pleasant lady.  Her name was Reggie, and we became good friends.  She bought me lots of paper doll sets which made me very happy, and she  made up the best stories which I begged her to tell whenever they came.  When Grandpa and Reggie came for holiday dinners, they brought my Great Grandfather Gruber who always slipped Dave and me a silver dollar.  “Shotsie,” German for sweet heart, was what my grandfather called me.  He was very proud that Dave and I were good at math and assumed we took after him. 

We also enjoyed traveling into Milwaukee where Grandpa and Reggie lived in an apartment.  We didn’t have much city experience of course and loved running in halls of the apartment even though it wasn’t really allowed.  We looked forward to our trips to Grandpa’s home.  It was a bit of an adventure as each visit there was always a surprise for us.  One Easter we got two live rabbits to our delight. 

Grandpa and Reggie retired to Florida where they had several cabins they rented out.  I had never been to Florida before so it was a special treat when we all drove down to spend time with them.  I even took my first plane trip down on another occasion.  I thoroughly enjoyed being with Reggie and Grandpa.  I knew that I was pretty much the “apple of his eye!”

As I grew up I put together bits and pieces of things I had seen and heard, and understood why Mom’s relationship with her father was strained.  I was always grateful to her though that she never told Dave and me much about her parent’s divorce and the sadness it had caused in her life which gave us the opportunity to have a good relationship with Grandpa.  I know it meant a lot to him too.

As an adult I realize how fortunate I was to have known and loved all of my grandparents.   I have great memories of all of them.  For some reason, however, I have always felt closest to my Grandmother Gruber, Mom’s mother, the only  grandparent I never met.
